It’s fascinating how two similar ideas can emerge around the same time, shaping industries in unexpected ways. The golf cart is one such example. In 1932, two innovators, Lyman Beecher and J.K. Wadley, independently came up with groundbreaking ideas. Beecher, a disabled golfer, created a rickshaw-like cart that caddies could pull from hole to hole, while Wadley repurposed an electric transportation cart for his personal use on the course. Little did they know, these two ideas would lay the foundation for what we now recognize as golf carts and Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs).

Enter Merle Williams, whose WWII experience with electric cars proved pivotal. In 1951 Williams took these early concepts and created a vehicle that would eventually revolutionize the golf cart industry—and beyond. His electric-powered design would go on to change the way we see this type of transportation in neighborhoods, beach communities, and, of course, on the greens.

The Evolution of Golf Carts and LSVs

Today’s golf carts have transformed far beyond their original role on golf courses. What once started as simple carts to carry players with challenges walking and their equipment has blossomed into multi-purpose vehicles used in various places.

According to Jason Huxford, ITC’s LSV account manager, "The future of the Golf Cart/LSV market is very bright. It has expanded and is continuing to expand beyond golf courses into airports, tourist attractions, university campuses, neighborhoods, community shuttles, and even short-term rentals."

As demand for these vehicles increases, so do the expectations from consumers. Golf cart owners are no longer satisfied with basic models; they want amenities that improve the experience and functionality. Some of the most popular upgrades today include wireless phone holder/chargers, LED courtesy lighting, and lithium-ion batteries. These upgrades not only enhance convenience but also help keep the vehicles eco-friendly and efficient.

A Growing Community of Golf Cart Enthusiasts

With the rise in popularity of golf carts and LSVs, a new community has emerged: golf cart clubs. These clubs are popping up in neighborhoods and on social media platforms like Facebook, where people showcase their customized carts and swap ideas. It’s clear that these vehicles are more than just a basic mode of short distance transportation—they’ve become a form of self-expression. Customization has become a major trend, with enthusiasts decking out their carts with everything from stylish interiors and exteriors to powerful sound systems and RGB lighting.

As this community grows, it’s evident that the world of golf carts and LSVs is not just expanding in use but also in creativity. Owners are also looking for opportunities to customize their carts for tailgating at the neighborhood softball or football game or hitting the trails for a nature picnic. Check out a table for tailgating or securely holding your beverages while on the go.

Whether it is a basic utility vehicle or a fully customized ride, the future of these electric vehicles looks bright and filled with endless possibilities for

cruising down a golf course pathway or navigating through your neighborhood. It’s clear that golf carts and LSVs are here to stay—and they’ll continue to evolve, making their mark on both our communities and our culture.
